Vancouver Canucks Eye Trade for Steven Stamkos Amid Injuries

Rumors are circulating that the Vancouver Canucks are exploring a potential trade for veteran forward Steven Stamkos. This speculation reignited a conversation that began nearly a decade ago when former Canucks general manager Jim Benning faced a fine of $50,000 for comments about wanting to sign the forward. Recently, hockey analyst Rick Dhaliwal mentioned the Canucks’ interest during an episode of his show, stating, “Someone told me the Canucks are poking around Steven Stamkos.”

The Canucks are reportedly “working the phones” as they seek a centreman, further emphasizing their need for depth given that they are currently the most injured team in the NHL. This context makes their interest in an affordable trade target like Stamkos understandable, although the circumstances have changed since 2016.

Back then, Stamkos was a premier player and one of the most sought-after free agents, ultimately choosing to re-sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning. This decision proved beneficial, as he helped lead the team to consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021. Currently, however, Stamkos, now aged 35, is struggling with the Nashville Predators, having recorded just one goal and two points in 11 games this season.

Despite averaging 17:22 of ice time per game, Stamkos has not lived up to expectations, particularly after being moved back to centre due to the performance issues of rookie Fedor Svechkov. His current contract, which spans four years at a cap hit of $8 million per season, complicates any potential trade discussions.

The Canucks face challenges in their pursuit of Stamkos due to their limited cap space. If the Predators decide to entertain offers for him, they would likely need to retain part of his salary. This could necessitate the Canucks trading a contract back to Nashville, or possibly placing a player like Filip Chytil on long-term injured reserve if no immediate solutions are found.

With the stakes high, the Canucks are in a delicate position as they navigate potential trades to bolster their lineup. As the team continues to look for ways to improve, the connection to Stamkos serves as a reminder of both the challenges and opportunities that come with roster adjustments in professional hockey.
