Ukrainian Christmas Eve Dinner Set for January 3 in Victoria
Preparations are in full swing for the Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner, scheduled to take place on January 3, 2025, at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Victoria. The event will commence at 6:30 p.m. and is organized by the Ukrainian Studies Society of Vancouver Island. This dinner not only serves as a community gathering but also as the society’s primary fundraiser of the year.
Pati-Ann Lawe, treasurer of the society, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “It’s our major fundraiser of the year.” Despite Ukraine’s recent shift from the Julian calendar to the New Julian calendar, which now celebrates Christmas on December 25 instead of the traditional January 7, the dinner will honor long-standing customs. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine made this calendar change in September 2023, reflecting a modern approach while still recognizing cultural heritage.
Guests attending the dinner can look forward to a rich array of traditional practices. Lawe elaborated, “We go through all the different parts of the evening, starting with the youngest child watching for the first star, and having the carollers come and greet the host and hostess.” The meal will feature 12 meatless dishes, a symbolic choice meant to honor the animals present during the birth of Christ.
Lawe extended an invitation to the community, saying, “Please feel welcome to come and enjoy the journey through the Ukrainian Christmas Eve traditions with us.” Tickets for the event can be purchased online or by calling 250-475-2585. Pricing is set at $75 for adults, $30 for students, and $10 for children under 12 years old.
The Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner not only nurtures community spirit but also reinforces cultural identity, making it a significant occasion for both attendees and organizers. As the date approaches, excitement builds around this cherished celebration, promising a night filled with warmth, tradition, and togetherness.
