U.S. Political Commentator Charlie Kirk Killed Amid Rising Tensions
On March 15, 2023, U.S. political commentator Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a university in Utah. The incident occurred in front of hundreds of students and was rapidly disseminated on social media, eliciting strong reactions from his supporters and sparking concern among journalists and experts monitoring the rising influence of far-right ideologies.
Canadian journalist Rachel Gilmore voiced her alarm on social media, sharing insights from her extensive reporting on the far right. She expressed concern that some of Kirk’s followers might interpret his assassination as a justification for further violence. Gilmore questioned whether these individuals would feel validated in their fears and pursue retaliation, regardless of the actual circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Reactions and Escalating Threats
In response, Conservative Member of Parliament Andrew Scheer criticized Gilmore, labeling her comments as “twisted” and alleging that she harbored “so much hate.” Other members of the Canadian Conservative party echoed his sentiments, contributing to a wave of backlash against Gilmore. A screenshot of one of her posts circulated among right-wing influencers, leading to further scrutiny.
Subsequently, Gilmore found her name featured prominently on a website titled “Expose Charlie’s Murderers,” which aimed to identify those deemed to have celebrated Kirk’s death. Many supporters of the MAGA movement called for punitive actions against individuals associated with Gilmore, including demands for them to lose their jobs.
Following these developments, Gilmore received numerous death and rape threats, with messages stating, “We know where you live.” This escalation of hostility underscores the alarming trend of online harassment directed at journalists who provide critical commentary on political figures.
The Broader Context of Violence and Extremism
According to a report by Wired, Gilmore’s analysis following the shooting was corroborated by the actions of high-profile figures within the MAGA movement. In the hours after Kirk’s death, these individuals and far-right extremists made posts advocating for civil war as a reaction to what they framed as “terrorism” perpetrated by Democrats. They characterized “the left” as “the party of murder” and called for a resurgence of far-right militias.
In a subsequent TikTok video, Gilmore elaborated on her observations, providing evidence of the growing boldness and organization of far-right extremists in Canada. She reiterated that Kirk’s murder was a horrific and unjust act that left his children without their father. Gilmore emphasized that threats against journalists for expressing well-founded opinions mark a dangerous shift in societal norms.
As a journalist with significant expertise on the far right, Gilmore’s work has been recognized for its adherence to standard journalistic practices. Despite being labeled an “influencer” by critics, her reporting aims to shed light on critical issues affecting society today. The emotional and frightening reality of Kirk’s assassination has resonated deeply with his admirers and those engaged in political discourse.
This incident highlights the urgent need for a dialogue surrounding the safety of journalists and the consequences of political rhetoric. It is imperative that society collectively condemns threats against those who seek to inform the public, ensuring that journalists can perform their duties without fear of violence.
