Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Acquires Elements Casino in Chilliwack
A coalition of First Nation communities from the Chilliwack area has reached a significant agreement to acquire Elements Casino Chilliwack from Great Canadian Entertainment. The announcement, made on November 10, 2023, follows the definitive agreement entered into on November 7. This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe and its member communities.
Chief David Jimmie, the leader of the Squiala First Nation and president of Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Management Ltd., expressed enthusiasm about the purchase. “This purchase marks an exciting milestone for our Nations and for the entire territory,” he stated. He emphasized that this investment is not only a strong business opportunity but also a commitment to the future of their people. The revenues generated from this acquisition, according to Jimmie, will bolster community development, create new opportunities, and enhance the Tribe’s role in the local economy.
Community Impact and Vision
The Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe comprises seven distinct First Nation communities and is recognized as the First People of the Chilliwack River watershed. This acquisition is described as a “transformational milestone” for the communities involved. The Tribe believes local ownership of Elements Casino Chilliwack will reinforce the broader Fraser Valley community and economy.
Matt Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment, conveyed excitement about the transition. “We have had the privilege of being part of the Chilliwack community since we opened Elements Casino Chilliwack in 2012,” he noted. Anfinson highlighted that the casino’s new ownership under the Ts’elxwéyeqw Group symbolizes a new chapter for the business. He expressed confidence in the leadership of the Tribe, stating that they are ideally positioned to manage the establishment effectively.
“We look forward to the closing and then working with the Ts’elxwéyeqw Group team during the transition period,” Anfinson added.
This acquisition reflects a growing trend of Indigenous communities taking ownership of local enterprises, which has broader implications for economic empowerment and community development. As Indigenous leadership continues to evolve, the collaboration seen in this project illustrates a commitment to mutual growth and a stronger, more inclusive future for all community members.
In summary, the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe’s acquisition of Elements Casino Chilliwack not only signifies a strong business venture but also represents a significant step toward economic independence and community enhancement. The deal is expected to benefit the local economy and reinforce the Tribe’s leadership within the region.
