High school football in Illinois kicked off with a series of heart-stopping finishes during Week 1, leaving fans and players buzzing with excitement. Several games concluded dramatically, providing answers to numerous questions and setting the stage for a thrilling season ahead.

Notable Games and Key Moments

One of the most riveting matchups took place on Thursday when East St. Louis faced off against Bergen Catholic, ranked No. 17 in the MaxPreps national rankings. With less than two minutes left, a blocked punt allowed the Crusaders to march downfield, scoring a touchdown that brought them within one point. Opting for a two-point conversion, they succeeded, clinching a 22-21 victory. Despite the loss, East St. Louis remains poised for future success, with upcoming games against Bishop Gorman and IMG Academy, ranked No. 3 and No. 7 nationally, respectively.

Later that day, Wheaton St. Francis mirrored this intensity, blocking a punt late in the game that set up a touchdown with just 12 seconds remaining. This last-minute surge secured a 38-34 win over Kenwood. The excitement continued into Friday night when a last-second, 24-yard field goal by Jack Swick granted Glenbard West a surprising 31-28 triumph over Batavia.

Another anticipated clash saw Wilmington nearly defeat Morris. With a touchdown scored at 4:21 left in the game, Morris executed an impressive two-minute drill, ultimately scoring with 22 seconds left for a 27-20 victory. Meanwhile, Mount Carmel, ranked No. 1 by Friday Night Drive, faced national powerhouse Cincinnati Moeller. After a back-and-forth battle, they opted for a two-point conversion in the last seconds, with new quarterback Emmett Dowling connecting with Quentin Burrell for the win. Dowling’s performance was notable, throwing for nearly 400 yards in his debut.

The weekend’s excitement did not end there, as Glenbrook South secured a victory over York in overtime, and Loyola scored a final-second touchdown to defeat Merrillville. St. Charles North also made headlines by successfully going for two points against Minooka.

Conference Performance and Individual Achievements

The competitive nature of high school football was evident across various leagues, most notably the West Suburban Silver. This conference achieved a strong record of 6-1 in nonconference games during Week 1, with the only loss occurring in overtime.

Both the CCL/ESCC Blue and Green Divisions also enjoyed success, finishing the week with a combined record of 4-0. Overall, the league’s teams posted a collective 16-8 record, with three losses attributed to matchups against fellow league teams.

On an individual level, standout performances were highlighted by Jonas Williams, quarterback for Lincoln-Way East. Williams threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns in a dominant win over Maine South. These impressive statistics moved him up the IHSA career leaderboard, where he now holds fourth place with 113 touchdown passes, just 14 short of the record. Williams has accumulated 9,290 career passing yards, placing him fifth all-time—a milestone that only three players have surpassed in IHSA history.

Another notable performance came from Aaron Stewart of Warren, who continued his impressive streak by rushing for 438 yards against Hersey, surpassing his own record from the previous season.

As Week 1 concludes, the excitement for Illinois high school football shows no signs of slowing down, with fans eagerly anticipating the next round of games and the potential for more unforgettable moments.
