Students Plan Walkout to Protest OSAP Funding Cuts
Students from Nicholson Catholic College in Ontario are set to stage a walkout on March 10, 2024, in response to recent changes to the provincial government’s funding structure for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). The protest, scheduled for 12:30 PM, aims to draw attention to the implications of these funding alterations on their educational prospects.
The changes introduced by Doug Ford‘s government will shift the balance of OSAP funding significantly. Under the new structure, 75 percent of the financial assistance will be available as loans, while only 25 percent will be offered as grants. This stands in stark contrast to the previous allocation, which provided 85 percent in grants and just 15 percent in loans.
Student organizers argue that this shift could jeopardize their ability to finance their education, potentially leading to increased debt burdens for many who rely on this support. The group believes that the changes will disproportionately affect those from low- and middle-income backgrounds, making higher education less accessible.
The rally is organized to foster unity among students and raise awareness about the potential impacts of the funding cuts. Participants encourage others to join them in voicing their concerns about the future of student financial aid in Ontario. More details about the event can be found on the Nicholson OSAP Walkout Instagram page, where students share information and updates related to the protest.
As the walkout approaches, discussions about the broader implications of these funding cuts continue among students and educators alike, highlighting the importance of accessible education in today’s society.
