A significant snowfall blanketed the Waterloo Region over the weekend, prompting Environment Canada to issue a snowfall warning. The region is expected to receive between 10 to 15 centimeters of snow from Saturday night into Sunday morning, creating challenging travel conditions.

Meteorologists indicate that the snow will be steady throughout the day, and with blowing snow affecting visibility, travel is likely to be hazardous, particularly on local highways. According to Carl Lam, a meteorologist from 570 News, winds could gust up to 60 km/h by the afternoon, adding to the severity of the weather. “The winds during the day are coming in from the southwest, but as we go into the evening, a cold front will move through, bringing colder air and a northwesterly wind,” Lam stated.

The expected high temperature for Sunday is 1°C, but wind chill factors will bring temperatures closer to -12°C. Snowfall warnings remain in effect for numerous municipalities in the region, including Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Wilmot, Woolwich, and Wellesley.

The recent blast of winter weather on Friday resulted in significant snowfall, with reports indicating over 30 centimeters fell during the day. Rob Kuhn, another meteorologist with Environment Canada, noted that the Stanley Park area of Kitchener recorded 33 centimeters of snow by 2 p.m. Friday, highlighting the storm’s intensity.

Travel disruptions have been widespread, with multiple road closures reported. A full closure of the westbound lanes on Highway 401 through Ayr, which began just before noon on November 28, has now been lifted. The closure spanned from Cedar Creek Road to Oxford Road 29/Drumbo Road, causing significant delays for motorists.

Drivers faced lengthy wait times on Thursday night and into Friday morning as the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) closed portions of Highway 401 near Drumbo around 10 p.m. due to a collision. Additionally, Highway 8 was closed between Cambridge and Hamilton on Friday morning following another accident reported at 8:30 a.m..

As the region continues to navigate through these winter conditions, residents are advised to stay informed about local traffic and weather updates. For ongoing coverage, tuning in to 570 News Radio will provide the latest information on the situation.
