Islanders in central and eastern parts of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) are bracing for significant snowfall and strong winds this weekend. A special weather statement issued by Environment Canada alerts residents of Queens and Kings counties to prepare for challenging conditions starting Sunday evening and continuing into Monday afternoon.

According to the weather statement, areas in the eastern regions of Kings County could see between 10 to 20 centimetres of snowfall accompanied by northeasterly wind gusts reaching 60 to 80 kilometres per hour. The situation is expected to worsen as travel conditions deteriorate due to accumulating snow and blowing snow. The statement also notes that power outages may occur as a result of the severe weather.

Meteorologist Jay Scotland from CBC P.E.I. indicated that the projected path of the storm suggests the most severe impacts will be felt south and east of the province. If this pattern holds, western areas might escape substantial snowfall, but residents should still anticipate blowing and drifting snow due to northeasterly to northerly winds.

Islanders are advised to prepare for hazardous road conditions and poor visibility from Sunday night through Monday afternoon. Scotland cautioned that blizzard-like conditions could develop, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h during this period.

As the weekend approaches, residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the impending storm.
