Samberg Embraces Mentor Role as Salomonsson Shines in NHL
In an inspiring turn of events for the Winnipeg Jets, defenceman Dylan Samberg has stepped into a mentor role for rising star Elias Salomonsson as the team prepares to face the Tampa Bay Lightning. This relationship marks a significant moment in Samberg’s career, reflecting his own journey just a few years prior when he was in a similar position as Salomonsson.
Speaking after the morning skate ahead of the game on January 18, 2024, Samberg, now 27, expressed his surprise at being viewed as a mentor. “It’s weird. I was in his shoes a few years ago,” he remarked. “Now to be called a mentor is a little bit different. It makes me feel old. It’s good. I’m just trying to help him as much as possible and trying to make sure he has fun while he’s doing it.”
Building Confidence on the Ice
Salomonsson is establishing himself as a formidable presence in his early NHL career, having recently played his tenth game against Tampa. The young defenceman’s development has been noticeable, particularly in high-pressure situations where he and Samberg have been tasked with defending against some of the league’s most skilled forwards.
Samberg noted the progress Salomonsson has made since joining the Jets. “He’s definitely building his confidence,” he said, highlighting that the rookie is becoming more comfortable on the ice. “He’s turning into an everyday NHL defenceman, which is nice to see.”
Samberg, who is now in his fourth full season and has played 253 NHL games, benefited from the guidance of Nate Schmidt during his own formative years in the league. He is keen to pass on the lessons learned to Salomonsson.
New Jets defenceman Luke Schenn, who joined the team last season, shared his admiration for Samberg’s mentorship. “I was so impressed with the way he carried himself and handled himself. He’s always calm and steady and can play those big, heavy matchups each and every night,” Schenn noted, emphasizing the positive impact Samberg has on Salomonsson.
Salomonsson’s Journey in the NHL
Salomonsson’s initial taste of NHL action came in late November when he played four games before returning to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League for further development. This experience has proven beneficial, as he returned to the Jets earlier this month with more confidence and poise.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel acknowledged the difference in Salomonsson’s gameplay since his return. “He recognizes that when he uses his skill set that he can be a really good defender,” Arniel said. He noted the rookie’s improved ability to jump into offensive plays while maintaining strong defensive skills.
Salomonsson’s development mirrors that of Samberg, as both players exhibit high hockey intelligence and mobility. They share a commitment to solid defensive play while executing efficient zone exits. “Those two have been really good,” Arniel said, underscoring their complementary skills on the ice.
As the Jets navigate the remainder of the season, the partnership between Samberg and Salomonsson is poised to become a key element of their defensive strategy. With regular playing time and continued mentorship, Salomonsson is expected to solidify his position as a full-time NHL player.
Schenn highlighted Salomonsson’s skating ability, suggesting it will enhance his contributions to the Jets’ defensive unit. “He has good gaps and he can close out plays off the rush and he’s moving the puck really well,” Schenn stated. “He’s going to be a great defenceman for this organization for a long time.”
With the NHL season progressing, fans will be watching closely to see how Salomonsson continues to develop under Samberg’s guidance and what impact this dynamic duo will have on the Jets’ performance moving forward.
