The Government of Saskatchewan has announced an investment of $1.7 million aimed at enhancing policing in Regina. This funding is part of a broader initiative across the province to bolster law enforcement resources and improve community safety. The money will primarily support the recruitment and retention of approximately 27 officers within the Regina Police Service.

The funding forms part of the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) enforcement initiative, which was introduced in the fall of 2024. For the fiscal year 2025-2026, the province has allocated nearly $6 million to facilitate the addition of around 100 new frontline officers throughout Saskatchewan. The primary objective of this initiative is to improve response times and support frontline policing efforts.

Regina Police Chief Lorilee Davies emphasized the growing complexity of crime and the increasing number of calls that police receive. “Crime is complex, more complex than ever,” she stated during a press conference. “We’re responding to more calls than we ever have, and so we need to increase that resourcing in order to respond effectively.” Chief Davies highlighted the importance of timely responses to emergencies, noting community expectations for swift action.

Regional funding allocations under the SCAN initiative also include $1.85 million for 24 officers in Saskatoon, $833,000 for seven officers in Prince Albert, and $714,000 for eight officers in Moose Jaw. Additional funding of $357,000 will continue to support three officers in Estevan, while $238,000 will fund similar support for two officers in Weyburn.

The renewed focus on enhancing law enforcement resources reflects the provincial government’s commitment to addressing public safety concerns. As communities grow and evolve, the demand for effective policing strategies becomes increasingly critical. This investment aims to ensure that police departments across Saskatchewan are adequately equipped to meet the challenges of modern policing.

Through initiatives like SCAN, the government seeks to foster safer communities by providing necessary resources for police services, ultimately benefiting residents and enhancing quality of life across the province.
