Ontario is set to experience a significant increase in rainfall this week, despite slightly above-normal temperatures across the region. Rain is already affecting parts of eastern Ontario, with showers reported this afternoon as clouds traverse the province. According to Stephen Flisfeder, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, many areas in southwestern Ontario experienced rain earlier today, leading to reports of flooded roads in the Kitchener and Guelph regions.

The forecast indicates that most parts of Ontario will see temperatures in the low 20s Celsius, with some areas potentially reaching the mid-20s. Flisfeder noted that locations such as Sarnia, Windsor, Essex, and Chatham are likely candidates for warmer conditions. In contrast, Algonquin Provincial Park and surrounding cottage country are expected to experience highs in the high teens.

Forecast Details for the Week

As the rainfall subsides, a low-pressure system is anticipated to move into the lower Great Lakes. “You could still encounter some shower activity in the earlier parts of the day tomorrow,” Flisfeder stated, adding that areas close to Lake Ontario and Lake Erie may experience rain until approximately 14:00 on Tuesday. The rest of the day is expected to clear up.

Temperatures are projected to remain above average on Tuesday and Wednesday, with eastern regions reaching the low 20s and the rest of the province hitting mid-20s. Late Wednesday, the cloud cover is expected to bring more rain across most areas. Flisfeder explained, “Southwestern Ontario will see rain starting Wednesday morning, and this low-pressure system will move northeast across all of southern Ontario.” He confirmed that rain will likely affect everyone in the region later that day.

Fortunately, the rain is not expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms or heavy downpours. Thursday will also bring rain and a noticeable cool-down, with temperatures dropping primarily due to the rainfall. “Even though those areas will be under the influence of warm air from the low-pressure system, central Ontario will see highs in the mid-teens,” Flisfeder noted, particularly across cottage country and areas southeast of Georgian Bay.

In eastern Ontario, some regions may remain in the teens, while others could peak around 20 degrees Celsius. “Southwestern Ontario looks to stay in the 20s but likely won’t exceed 22 or 23 degrees Celsius,” Flisfeder added. By Friday, the rain is expected to clear, with slightly warmer temperatures anticipated.

Residents are advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions as the week progresses, particularly in areas prone to flooding. The forecast suggests a mix of weather, with rain and milder temperatures dominating the early part of the week before a transition towards clearer skies later on.
