North Star Air Launches Direct Flights from Kenora to Thunder Bay
North Star Air will commence a direct passenger air service between Kenora and Thunder Bay, Ontario, beginning on January 15, 2026. This new route will significantly reduce travel time from approximately five-and-a-half hours by road to just one hour by air. The initiative aims to address the gap in commercial airline services following the exit of Bearskin Airlines, which discontinued operations in May 2024.
The Kenora Airport Authority has partnered with North Star Air to establish this scheduled service. This collaboration follows a comprehensive feasibility study and stakeholder survey conducted since the fall, which highlighted the necessity for a new passenger air carrier in the region. Ryan Reynard, chairman of the Kenora Airport Authority, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This new partnership with North Star Air marks an exciting milestone for the Kenora Airport and our community.”
Enhancing Connectivity and Economic Growth
The new air service is expected to enhance the regional transportation network and improve access to essential services, commerce, and tourism opportunities across northern Ontario. Jeff Stout, president and chief operating officer of North Star Air, noted, “This new route reflects our commitment to helping communities stay connected and supporting economic growth across the region.”
With a population of around 15,000 residents, Kenora’s mayor, Andrew Poirier, hailed the return of passenger air services, emphasizing its potential to boost tourism and meet health-care needs. “The construction of a new hospital in Kenora may bring more patients further west to access services,” he explained. Poirier added that the current state of highways in northwestern Ontario limits travel options, making air travel a vital alternative.
The direct flight service not only facilitates easier access for residents but also significantly cuts down travel time for frequent commuters. “For those who frequently travel across the region for work, being able to take a one-hour flight rather than spending upwards of 11 hours driving back and forth means you basically save a day,” Poirier remarked. He highlighted that the efficiency of the service will allow travelers to better align their schedules with other airlines operating out of Thunder Bay.
Community Engagement and Future Development
In preparation for the launch, the Kenora Airport Authority plans to collaborate closely with regional partners, municipalities, and tourism organizations to ensure the service meets community needs and grows sustainably over time. A launch event is scheduled at the Kenora Airport with North Star Air on December 20, 2025, just weeks before the service officially begins.
As the region looks toward a revitalized air travel landscape, the new service represents a significant step forward for Kenora and its neighboring communities. With the promise of improved connectivity, economic benefits, and enhanced access to health services, this partnership is poised to transform the travel experience for residents of northwestern Ontario.
