BC Transplant Celebrates Holiday Thanks with Popcorn at Peace Arch
BC Transplant volunteers expressed their gratitude to healthcare teams at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock on December 4, 2023, through an initiative called “Operation Popcorn.” This annual event aims to recognize the vital role healthcare staff play in organ donation and transplantation by delivering boxes filled with popcorn and treats.
During this year’s operation, BC Transplant distributed over 5,000 packages across various medical departments including intensive care units and transplant clinics throughout British Columbia. The holiday initiative not only offers snacks but also serves as a platform for transplant recipients and their families to share personal stories of gratitude with the medical staff who contributed to their journeys.
At Peace Arch Hospital, three boxes were delivered to nursing and operating room staff, as well as intensive care unit personnel. “We are here to say thank you to the staff for the hard work they do,” said Bobbi Paquette, the in-hospital coordinator for BC Transplant, highlighting the importance of recognizing the dedication of healthcare workers.
Joining Paquette were two volunteers, Vicki Ellestad and Earl Howell, both of whom are transplant recipients. Ellestad, a kidney recipient, shared her heartfelt appreciation for the medical professionals who played a role in her life-changing procedure over a decade ago. “I was healthy all my life until I wasn’t,” she said, emphasizing the impact of receiving a kidney transplant. Her experience has allowed her to actively engage in her grandchildren’s lives, a gift she cherishes deeply.
Howell, who received a liver transplant 28 years ago, echoed Ellestad’s sentiments. He expressed his gratitude, stating, “This is the highlight of my Christmas time, coming to say thank you for all your work.” Both recipients underscored the emotional connection formed between donors and recipients, with Ellestad mentioning her monthly “monthiversary” calls with her donor.
Paquette noted that many healthcare workers seldom see the positive outcomes of their efforts once patients leave the hospital. Events like “Operation Popcorn” provide a valuable opportunity to witness the life-affirming results of their dedication. Currently, there are approximately 6,500 transplant recipients alive and thriving in British Columbia.
According to Eric Lun, executive director of BC Transplant, “Operation Popcorn is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of organ donation.” He highlighted legislative changes, such as the adoption of Bill C-210 in 2021, which allows the Canada Revenue Agency to share information about organ donation with taxpayers who consent. This initiative has led to more than one million positive responses regarding organ donation from the tax return forms sent out earlier this year.
As of November 6, 2023, there are 1,617,709 British Columbians registered in the Organ Donor Registry. BC Transplant encourages individuals to check their inboxes for emails regarding organ donation and to register their decisions.
