Kimberley Dynamiters Aim for Championship After Strong Season
The Kimberley Dynamiters are gearing up for the 2025-26 season of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) with high hopes. Last season, they dominated the league, finishing with an impressive record of 32-9-3 and clinching the Eddie Mountain regular season championship. However, their journey ended in disappointment when they fell to the Grand Forks Border Bruins in the Kootenay Conference championship series, losing in five games.
As the new season unfolds, head coach and general manager Derek Stuart expressed optimism about his team’s prospects. “We have a lot of good returning players, and the rookies have seemed to fit right in and they’re starting to figure out how things work,” Stuart noted. He emphasized the team’s work ethic and puck movement, which he believes will be crucial as they aim for a championship.
Key Returning Players and New Additions
The Dynamiters will benefit from the experience of several key returning players. Among them are forwards Luke Davies, who recorded 56 points last season, and Danik Reeves, who contributed 45 points. Other notable returnees include forwards Nolan Kelly and Nate Tillmanns, as well as a solid defensive lineup featuring Jackson Murphy and Nathan Scott.
In preparation for the upcoming season, the team has also made strategic acquisitions. Forward Maguire Nicholson joins from the Sicamous Eagles, where he posted 29 points last season, while Carter Coutu was signed from the Canmore Eagles. Additionally, goaltender Ethan Beattie comes onboard after a stint with the Kenora Islands, providing depth in the net.
The Dynamiters are also integrating a promising group of rookies, including forwards Matthew Lenz and Jake Murdoch. Murdoch had an impressive season with the U18 East Kootenay Avalanche, tallying 72 points before joining the Dynamiters, where he has already made an impact in two games with five points.
Aiming for Redemption
The returning players are motivated by their near-miss in the previous season. Stuart reflected on their loss to the Border Bruins, stating, “We felt like we probably deserved a better fate in that series, especially near the end. We got a little bit of a taste from getting close to the KIJHL final. I know the staff and all the returning players are determined to get back there and take the next step to get to the finals.”
Stuart has high expectations for veterans such as Davies, Reeves, and Tillmanns, noting that Kelly has shown strong early performance. He is particularly encouraged by the improved condition of the team’s defensive corps, stating, “We have six returning defencemen, and all of them look better than they did at the end of last year.”
With a blend of returning talent and fresh prospects, the Kimberley Dynamiters are poised to make a strong push for the KIJHL championship this season, seeking to turn last year’s disappointment into motivation for success.
