Quinte West Mayor Reacts to Federal Budget with Hope and Concerns
Quinte West’s Mayor, Jim Harrison, expressed a cautious optimism following the announcement of the latest federal budget. While recognizing the potential benefits, he also highlighted several concerns that residents and local businesses might face as they navigate the economic changes.
Harrison acknowledged that although there are tax cuts included in the budget, many community members, especially farmers, need to see sufficient income before tax considerations become relevant. “People are going to have to work harder to get less for their money,” he stated. This sentiment reflects the broader apprehension among constituents regarding the financial implications of the new budgetary measures.
The mayor pointed to significant military investments as a positive aspect of the budget. He noted that CFB Trenton, a key military base in the area, is expected to receive a major boost. Harrison believes this will not only enhance local military capabilities but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth in Quinte West.
Infrastructure funding was another critical area of focus for Harrison. He emphasized the importance of the announced investments, stating that “every municipality has projects pending.” This funding is vital for enhancing local roads, public transport, and other essential services that contribute to community well-being.
As local governments begin to assess the impacts of the federal budget, Harrison’s perspective underscores the delicate balance between optimism for new opportunities and the reality of economic challenges. Moving forward, the community will be paying close attention to how these federal decisions translate into tangible benefits for residents and businesses in Quinte West.
