Quebec Withdraws Funding for Northvolt’s Battery Plant Project
The Quebec government has officially announced the termination of funding for Northvolt’s proposed battery plant in the province’s Montéregie region. Economy Minister Christine Fréchette stated that the decision was made after Northvolt failed to present an acceptable plan that would benefit the residents of Quebec.
The government had invested $510 million into the project, which included a substantial $270 million investment in Northvolt’s parent company based in Sweden, before it declared bankruptcy in March 2025. Quebec authorities are now focusing on recovering a $240 million guaranteed loan that was issued to secure the land for the intended plant.
Despite the setback with Northvolt, Minister Fréchette emphasized that this failure does not signify the end of Quebec’s ambitions in the battery industry. In fact, interest in the region’s battery manufacturing capabilities remains strong. Recently, the American company Lyten announced its intention to acquire control of the Northvolt project. The company is currently engaged in discussions with both the federal and provincial governments regarding this potential acquisition.
The decision to withdraw funding reflects the Quebec government’s commitment to ensuring that investments align with the needs and expectations of its citizens. As the province continues to navigate challenges in the evolving battery sector, it remains focused on fostering an environment that supports viable and sustainable industrial growth.
This report was first published by The Canadian Press on September 2, 2025. The implications of these developments could resonate throughout the region, as Quebec seeks to maintain its foothold in the competitive landscape of battery manufacturing and clean energy solutions.
