Beck Urges Infrastructure Investments to Boost Economy in Prince Albert
Saskatchewan NDP leader Carla Beck visited Prince Albert on August 7, 2025, where she emphasized the need for increased infrastructure investment to enhance economic prospects for families in the region. During her visit, Beck engaged with local leaders, discussing pressing issues such as economic development and crime, which she noted were recurring themes in conversations with community members.
“Prince Albert is a city on the verge of incredible opportunity,” Beck stated, highlighting its potential as a gateway to the north and a hub for the province’s northern regions. She met with members of the City Council and leaders from the local Sikh and Muslim communities, underscoring the importance of collaboration between provincial representatives and local leaders to tackle issues of crime and poverty.
Call for Strategic Infrastructure Development
Beck articulated a vision for a brighter future for Prince Albert, insisting that the province must take charge of its economic destiny. She outlined plans for essential infrastructure projects, including more rail lines, pipelines, and power lines, which she believes would significantly benefit the mining and forestry sectors in the area.
“The people here are full of hope, determination, and creative ideas,” Beck remarked in a press release. “They need a government that will harness that energy and deliver on real promises for change.” She suggested that infrastructure investments would lead to increased job opportunities and economic growth, stating, “This means more boots on the ground, not more bureaucracy.”
Addressing the economic challenges posed by international pressures, particularly from the United States, Beck emphasized the necessity of a “team Saskatchewan” approach. She highlighted the importance of including Indigenous leadership and various stakeholders in discussions about market access and economic strategy. “These discussions are obviously difficult and complex, but you pick your hard,” Beck said, advocating for inclusive planning.
Critique of Current Government Policies
Beck was critical of Premier Scott Moe for what she described as a passive stance against U.S. trade policies, particularly those implemented by President Donald Trump. She characterized Trump’s tariff policies as harmful and called for a more assertive response from the Saskatchewan government. “We need to fight back against these job-killing tariffs, and we need bold action to build a future that we control,” Beck asserted.
In response to the expanding steel and aluminum tariffs affecting Canadian goods, Moe recently communicated with the federal government through trade minister Warren Keading, seeking action to address these trade barriers. Despite the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, Moe maintains that Saskatchewan’s economic status remains strong, citing substantial income tax cuts and record investments in health, education, and infrastructure.
As Beck continues her campaign, she remains focused on uniting local voices to foster a collaborative approach to economic development in Prince Albert and beyond. Her commitment to addressing community needs reflects a broader vision for a sustainable and prosperous future for Saskatchewan.
