Pieter-Steph du Toit Eyes Historic Third World Rugby Award
Springboks flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 World Rugby Men’s Player of the Year Award, positioning him to potentially become a three-time recipient of this honour. This recognition could place him alongside New Zealand legends Dan Carter and Richie McCaw, the only players to have achieved this distinction in the sport’s history.
Du Toit secured his place on the shortlist alongside fellow South African teammates Malcolm Marx and Ox Nche, as well as French winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey. The winner of the award will be announced on Saturday, further heightening anticipation in the rugby community.
Du Toit’s Remarkable Journey
Having previously won the award in both 2019 and 2024, Du Toit has made the shortlist in those two years alone, showcasing his exceptional talent and consistency on the field. His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, and he stands as one of the leading figures in international rugby today. Notably, he is joined in the ranks of dual winners by New Zealand’s Beauden Barrett.
Du Toit’s potential third win would place him in a rarefied air, as only Carter and McCaw have reached this milestone within the men’s rugby category. The acclaim he has garnered reflects both his individual skill and his contributions to the Springboks’ success in recent years.
Recognition in Women’s Rugby
While the men’s award is eagerly awaited, attention has also turned to the women’s category. Following the recent 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup held in England, Sophie de Goede, a goalkicking lock from Canada, was announced as the best women’s player. Her achievement marks a significant milestone in women’s rugby, further emphasizing the growing recognition and support for the sport.
The announcement for both categories highlights the ongoing evolution of rugby, showcasing talent from around the globe. Du Toit’s journey, along with the achievements of his peers, continues to inspire fans and players alike, reinforcing rugby’s status as a premier global sport.
