OPP Officer’s Close Call at Kitchener School Bus Crash Scene
An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident while investigating the scene of a tragic school bus crash on November 2, 2023. The incident occurred on Highway 401 in Middlesex County, where a school bus carrying students from Kitchener Collegiate Institute (KCI) was involved in a collision that resulted in the death of the bus driver and injuries to four students.
According to a social media post by Sgt. Ed Sanchuk, while police were conducting their investigation, a vehicle disregarded police barricades and sped through the closed scene. The driver “made a shocking and dangerous move,” ignoring all warnings and endangering the lives of the officers present.
The vehicle struck police equipment and missed hitting an officer by mere inches. Sanchuk emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “this was extremely dangerous, where an officer nearly lost their life.”
In a further escalation, another motorist attempted to breach the road closure, colliding with a barrier. This reckless behavior not only jeopardized the safety of law enforcement but also highlighted a concerning trend of disregard for road safety protocols. Sanchuk reminded the public that highway closure barriers “are not suggestions; they’re lifelines for first responders and the public.”
The OPP is seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has details about the vehicle that nearly struck the officer. There have been no updates regarding the investigation into the school bus crash itself, which has left the community in mourning.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties, particularly in high-stress situations such as investigating fatal accidents. The OPP urges motorists to respect road closures, as they play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of both first responders and the public.
