GO Transit service continues to be affected as repairs are underway following a recent train derailment near Union Station. Metrolinx, the provincial transportation agency, reported that while track repairs have largely been completed, ongoing signal work will extend the impact on train service into Thursday, March 14, 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, Metrolinx officials confirmed that crews are still actively working west of Union Station. The agency stated, “The majority of the necessary track repairs are completed with the remaining work related to the signal system, which sustained significant damage.” The statement further noted that repairs to the signal system will take longer than anticipated.

Service Adjustments and Commuter Impact

Delays were reported during the Wednesday morning commute, largely attributed to high passenger volumes and reduced service schedules. Despite these challenges, Metrolinx indicated that “service has been steady,” and additional trips have been added on the Lakeshore East, Lakeshore West, and Milton GO Transit train lines to accommodate commuters.

As of Wednesday morning, the operational intervals for various GO Transit and UP Express trains are as follows:

  • Barrie line: 30-minute morning and afternoon peak service
  • Kitchener line: 30-minute morning and afternoon peak service, 60-minute off-peak service
  • Lakeshore East line: 15-to-30-minute morning and afternoon peak service, 60-minute off-peak service
  • Lakeshore West line: 15-to-30-minute morning and afternoon peak service, 60-minute off-peak service
  • Milton line: 30-minute morning and afternoon peak service
  • Richmond Hill line: 60-minute morning and afternoon peak service
  • Stouffville line: 30-minute morning and afternoon peak service
  • UP Express: Normal 15-minute service

The situation arose after a rear passenger car of a Kitchener-bound GO Transit train derailed shortly after 8:15 a.m. on March 11, 2024. Metrolinx reported that the train, operating at low speed, “experienced an issue that caused the rear of the train to come off the track and make contact with a track switch.” Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during this incident.

Investigation and Future Service Plans

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, with Metrolinx committed to providing updates as new information becomes available. Following the derailment, the affected train was removed from the tracks by Tuesday, which allowed for the commencement of repairs.

As the situation develops, it remains unclear whether additional services will be implemented to further alleviate commuter congestion on Wednesday or Thursday.
