A significant leadership change has taken place within the Canadian swine sector as the Swine Innovation Porc (SIP) appointed Mark Ferguson as its new chair. This announcement was made last month, marking a new chapter for the organization that coordinates research, development, and knowledge transfer in Canada’s pork industry.

Ferguson, who has over 20 years of experience, previously served as the General Manager of the Saskatchewan Pork Development Commission, located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His extensive background includes a history of advancing various initiatives aimed at fostering growth within the industry. Raised on a family farm near Edgeley, Saskatchewan, Ferguson is also actively involved as the Chair of the Prairie Swine Centre board of directors.

“I am honoured to head up the group,” Ferguson stated. “I look forward to working with our members and partners towards our shared vision of ensuring long-term profitable pork production through collaborative research and innovation.” He emphasized the importance of SIP’s role in uniting producer groups and industry partners across Canada, stating that this collaboration is vital for the sector’s success.

Leadership Transition and Future Goals

Ferguson’s appointment comes as he succeeds Arno Schober, who has led the SIP board since 2021. Schober’s tenure has been noted for significant contributions to the organization and the industry. SIP General Manager Daniel Ramage expressed confidence in Ferguson’s ability to lead the Canadian pork research community, highlighting the continuity of leadership as a strength moving forward.

“We also extend our sincere thanks to Arno for his years of service to our organization and commend his efforts driving innovation on behalf of the pork value chain,” Ramage remarked.

Ferguson will join fellow executive team members René Roy as Vice-Chair and Jorge Correa as Treasurer on the SIP Board of Directors. This team will be responsible for steering SIP’s initiatives and fostering collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing research and development in the pork sector.

Founded in 2010, Swine Innovation Porc operates as a not-for-profit organization. It represents the Canadian Pork Council and eight provincial pork producer organizations, focusing on the sustainable growth of the pork industry through innovative research and strategic partnerships.

As Ferguson embarks on this new role, the industry watches closely, anticipating advancements in research that will impact pork production in Canada. His leadership is expected to enhance SIP’s mission and further solidify the organization’s importance in the national agricultural landscape.
