Metro Vancouver Facilities Win IOC Architectural Awards for Design Innovation
Two new recreation facilities in Metro Vancouver have received prestigious accolades from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for their architectural design. Both the Sea Otter House (təməsew̓txw) Aquatic and Community Centre and the Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre were recognized with the IOC IAKS Architecture Prize, highlighting the region’s commitment to innovative community spaces.
Recognition for Innovative Design
The IOC IAKS Architecture Prize is a biennial award that honors exceptional sports, leisure, and recreational facility designs. This year, the prize received 69 entries from 25 countries, with only nine awards presented. The two winning designs, completed and opened in Spring 2024, were created by the Vancouver-based architectural firm HCMA. The facilities not only emphasize community access and engagement but also integrate sustainable design elements, placing Metro Vancouver firmly on the global architectural map.
The $114 million Sea Otter House Aquatic and Community Centre replaces the Canada Games Pool and the Centennial Community Centre in New Westminster. The jury praised it as “a place where everyone can come together and enjoy being active.” The centre includes an eight-lane, 50-metre lap swimming pool, a leisure pool with 25-metre lap lanes, and various amenities such as a hot pool, sauna, and fitness centre. Notably, it is Canada’s first all-electric aquatic centre, employing a gravity-fed filtration system that significantly reduces energy consumption.
Community Impact and Future Developments
The Sea Otter House also features solar panels on its rooftop and showcases mass-timber materials that harmoniously blend with the surrounding landscape. Its design prioritizes inclusivity, offering a barrier-free environment for diverse community members.
The $54 million Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre, located in Burnaby’s Edmonds neighbourhood, boasts two ice rinks, each with a seating capacity of up to 200 spectators. The jury noted its “architecturally stunning” layout, which includes a linear lobby providing clear views of the rinks and fostering social interaction among visitors. The extensive use of mass-timber materials enhances the atmosphere while effectively managing humidity levels to ensure a comfortable environment for athletes and spectators alike.
Metro Vancouver is currently experiencing a surge in community and recreation facility developments, driven by various initiatives, particularly those from the City of Burnaby. Both award-winning projects are part of a broader vision aimed at enhancing community engagement and physical activity throughout the region.
The recognition from the IOC IAKS Architecture Prize underscores the increasing global attention on Metro Vancouver as a leader in sports and civic architecture. Notably, at the previous awards in 2023, three projects from the region also received accolades, including the outdoor stadium at Simon Fraser University and the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre expansion.
As Metro Vancouver continues to evolve, the successful completion of these recreation facilities signals a commitment to innovative design and community engagement, paving the way for future developments that align with sustainable practices and inclusive access for all.
