Manitoba Health has issued a public health bulletin urging individuals who attended the recent Manitoba Ag Days event in Brandon to monitor for symptoms of measles. The event, which is recognized as Canada’s largest indoor farm show, took place from March 7 to March 9, 2024.

Health Advisory and Symptoms

Officials from Manitoba Health are particularly concerned about potential exposure to the highly contagious virus. Symptoms of measles can appear between 7 to 14 days after exposure, with initial signs including high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A distinctive rash typically develops two to four days after the onset of these initial symptoms.

Individuals who attended the event are advised to watch for these symptoms throughout the week and to seek medical attention if they develop. The agency emphasizes that measles can lead to serious complications, especially in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Vaccination Status and Public Health Measures

Manitoba Health encourages everyone to ensure their vaccinations are up to date. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the disease. According to health officials, those who are vaccinated are significantly less likely to contract the virus.

The agency has not confirmed how many individuals may have been exposed during the farm show. They are working with local health officials to investigate the situation further. Community members are reminded that measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in public settings.

In an effort to mitigate further spread, Manitoba Health has advised the public to practice good hygiene measures, including frequent hand washing and monitoring for symptoms. They also stress the importance of staying home if ill to prevent transmission.

The health agency will provide updates as more information becomes available. If you suspect you have been exposed to measles or are experiencing symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately for guidance.
