A significant watermain repair at the intersection of King and Fountain in Cambridge is causing ongoing traffic disruptions as of Tuesday morning. The repair, which began around 1 a.m. on Friday, required a large hole to be excavated in the middle of the intersection, impacting traffic flow for many commuters returning to work after the Family Day long weekend.

Initially, the City of Cambridge announced via social media that the repair work would be completed by Friday afternoon. However, complications arose when a third-party utility was damaged during the repair process. The city later confirmed that repairs to the utility would need to be completed before the area could safely reopen to traffic.

The city’s update stated, “Parts are being sourced and repairs will begin as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.” As a result of these delays, detours remain in effect on King Street, Eagle Street, and Speedsville Road. Currently, left turns from King to Fountain Street and from Fountain to King are prohibited. Traffic approaching from the direction of the Toyota plant can still navigate through the intersection, but those coming from Shantz Hill must turn down King Street.

Impact on Local Traffic and Commuters

The ongoing construction has created significant delays, particularly for those returning to work after the holiday weekend. Commuters are advised to expect continued traffic issues as the city works to resolve the situation.
