WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets faced a challenging loss against the Carolina Hurricanes, falling 4-3 on November 21, 2025. The game marked a significant moment for backup goaltender Eric Comrie, who stepped in for Connor Hellebuyck, sidelined due to an arthroscopic knee surgery expected to keep him out for four to six weeks.

Comrie was tested early when Jordan Staal scored just 16 seconds into the game. Despite this rapid setback, Jets head coach Scott Arniel expressed confidence in his goaltender’s ability to rebound. “I felt for him right away but then he settled in,” Arniel noted. Comrie made a total of 24 saves throughout the match, demonstrating resilience and skill.

Team Efforts and Individual Highlights

The Jets struggled defensively but received notable performances from Gabriel Vilardi, who scored two goals, and Josh Morrissey, who added another, extending his point streak to seven games. Morrissey, with four goals and seven assists during this stretch, is becoming a key player for Winnipeg as they navigate this challenging phase.

Arniel stated, “We need to play better in front of him,” referring to Comrie’s efforts despite his teammates’ defensive lapses. The head coach emphasized the need for improvement, particularly in avoiding mistakes that put unnecessary pressure on Comrie.

Reflecting on the team’s dynamics, defenceman Dylan DeMelo highlighted Comrie’s impact both on and off the ice, saying, “He’s one of our hardest workers… he just brings so much energy to this group.”

The Jets managed to tie the game shortly after Staal’s opening goal, with Morrissey scoring at 3:44 of the first period. Vilardi added a power-play goal at 9:28, following a turnover from Carolina, which momentarily shifted the momentum in Winnipeg’s favor.

The Hurricanes, however, regained control, with Staal scoring again at 3:08 of the second period. Seth Jarvis added a shorthanded goal at 6:31, extending Carolina’s lead to 4-2.

As the game progressed, Winnipeg fought back, with Vilardi scoring again just 54 seconds after Jarvis’ goal. Despite the late-game push, the Jets were unable to equalize, even after pulling Comrie for an extra attacker in the final moments.

A Tribute to Nikolaj Ehlers

Amid the competition, the game also featured a heartfelt tribute to former Jet Nikolaj Ehlers. The forward, who played 674 games for Winnipeg before joining the Hurricanes, received a video tribute that resonated with fans at the Canada Life Centre. Ehlers acknowledged the crowd’s support with a wave, reinforcing the strong connections built during his tenure in Winnipeg.

Ehlers later assisted on Svechnikov’s goal, showcasing his continued prowess on the ice. Andrei Svechnikov praised Ehlers, stating, “He’s one of the best passers in this league… he’ll always find you.”

As the Jets look ahead, the emphasis will remain on improving their defensive performance to support Comrie and upcoming matches, reflecting a commitment to teamwork and resilience in the face of adversity.
