Iva Jovic Upsets Jasmine Paolini at Australian Open, Advances to Last 16
Iva Jovic, an 18-year-old American tennis player, achieved a remarkable milestone by defeating Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 7-6(3) at the 2026 Australian Open. This victory marks Jovic’s first appearance in the last 16 of a Grand Slam tournament, solidifying her status as a rising star in the sport.
In a match that showcased her determination, Jovic turned the tables on Paolini, who had previously triumphed over her in two earlier meetings at Indian Wells and the U.S. Open. This win not only serves as a personal victory for Jovic but also extends her impressive winning streak to ten matches this season.
Jovic Reflects on Her Journey
After the match, Jovic expressed her elation, stating, “It feels amazing, I’ve been working really hard for it. I’ve been wanting this one for a while now. I had a couple of tough losses. I’m just so happy to get through that barrier and get the win today.” The young athlete had the chance to serve for the match but faced a resilient Paolini, who managed to push the set into a tiebreak. Jovic, however, maintained her composure, winning the final five points to secure her victory.
“I tried to focus on what I was doing earlier in the match, being really aggressive and controlling the play,” Jovic added. “I think when I served for the match, I got a little too passive. So I told myself to go out swinging and it helped in the tiebreak.” Jovic’s next challenge will be against Yulia Putintseva in the fourth round.
A Memorable Day for Young Tennis Players
Jovic’s victory added to a noteworthy day for North American teenagers, as Victoria Mboko, a 19-year-old from Canada, also progressed after defeating Clara Tauson with a score of 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3.
In the aftermath of her match, Paolini, currently ranked eighth in the world, disclosed that she had been experiencing stomach issues, which affected her performance. “I think I lay down on the sofa after lunch and that wasn’t a good idea for my stomach. I stepped on court and I couldn’t move at my best,” she explained. Despite her struggles, Paolini praised Jovic, stating, “She’s a very tough opponent already – very mature on court, not many mistakes. She’s playing good every shot, basically. So I think she has a really bright future ahead.”
Adding to the excitement of Jovic’s win was her interaction with Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic. Prior to her match against Paolini, Jovic received valuable advice from Djokovic, which she described as “incredible.” She noted, “I spoke to Novak yesterday a little bit… He gave me some very attentive tips for my game and something I can try to incorporate into this match that I just played.” Jovic emphasized the importance of Djokovic’s insights, saying, “When Novak gives you some advice, you follow it.”
The atmosphere surrounding Jovic’s performance and her interactions with seasoned players like Djokovic contribute to the narrative of a promising future for this young athlete, who is quickly making her mark on the international tennis scene.
