A hiker sustained an ankle injury at Illal Meadows on September 1, 2023, prompting a rescue operation by Hope Volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR). The woman, who was camping with a group, was injured after stepping into a gopher hole while attempting to reach a bear hang.

Hope SAR, in collaboration with Valley Helicopters Ltd., stabilized the hiker’s ankle and transported her to an ambulance waiting nearby. The organization highlighted the importance of safety in outdoor activities, stating, “Accidents can happen anywhere, and Hope SAR is always ready to assist when access to transportation is out of reach.”

The incident unfolded when the hiker’s companions used tent pegs and a tensor bandage to create a temporary splint. Recognizing the difficulty of hiking approximately eight kilometres back to safety, the group made the prudent decision to call for help.

Recent Rescue Operations by Hope SAR

This incident is part of a busy month for Hope SAR, which was involved in four significant rescue assignments in August. The team responded to a variety of emergencies, including the recovery of a man who drowned in the Coquihalla River on August 3, a rescue of two hikers from Yak Peak on August 7, assistance for a person on the Fraser River on August 22, and another rescue at Zupjok Peak on August 26.

Following the Zupjok Peak rescue, Hope SAR issued a reminder to the public regarding the importance of carrying the “10 essentials” when hiking. These essentials include navigation tools, a headlamp, sun protection, a first aid kit, a knife, matches or another fire-starting method, shelter, extra food, extra water, and additional clothing.

Moreover, Hope SAR emphasized the necessity of having an emergency plan while exploring the outdoors, especially during extreme weather conditions. They stressed the significance of being prepared for high or low temperatures and urged hikers to be vigilant.

Calling for search and rescue assistance is free, and Hope SAR advised the public to always initiate contact through emergency services, specifically by dialing 911, in case of an emergency situation. As outdoor activities continue to draw enthusiasts, the organization’s ongoing commitment underscores the need for safety and preparedness in all outdoor pursuits.
