Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Travel and Parking in Halifax
A significant winter storm is affecting Halifax and surrounding areas, with Environment Canada issuing a yellow snowfall warning for central Nova Scotia. The weather agency forecasts that between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning, the region will receive between 25 to 30 cm of snow. Additionally, wind gusts reaching 50 to 70 km/h are expected, contributing to difficult travel conditions due to blowing snow.
According to Environment Canada, the heaviest snowfall is anticipated overnight and into Monday morning. The agency warns of reduced visibility in open and exposed areas along the Atlantic Coast as strong winds create challenging conditions for motorists. As a result of the severe weather, a number of flights from Halifax Stanfield International Airport have already been cancelled, with the airport authority advising that further delays and cancellations are likely throughout the day. Passengers are encouraged to check flight statuses online for real-time updates.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education has yet to provide information regarding potential school closures on Monday, leaving parents and students awaiting official announcements.
In response to the expected weather conditions, the Halifax Regional Municipality has enacted an overnight winter parking ban. This ban will be enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. to facilitate the clearance of streets and sidewalks by municipal crews. The notice issued by the municipality states, “Vehicles must be off municipal streets during the hours noted above.”
Violations of the parking ban could result in towing, as the municipality emphasizes that vehicles obstructing snow-clearing operations can be towed at any time of year, according to Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act. Furthermore, vehicles that hinder sidewalk clearing can lead to accessibility issues for pedestrians, prompting the municipality to remind residents of their responsibility during winter months.
For more details about municipal winter operations, residents can visit the municipality’s official website, which provides updated information on snow clearing and parking regulations during severe weather conditions. As Halifax braces for this winter storm, residents are advised to remain vigilant and plan their travel accordingly.
