Hamilton-Burlington SPCA Unveils Plans for Groundbreaking Animal Care Hub

The Hamilton-Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) has announced plans for an innovative animal welfare campus, described as a “first of its kind in Canada.” The new facility is set to address the projected 50 percent increase in pet surrenders due to rising living costs over the next five years. According to Brad Grabell, the HBSPCA’s director of strategy, the campus aims to be a comprehensive resource for pet care, providing services designed to keep pets in their homes.

The ambitious project will take place on their existing site at 245 Dartnall Rd. and will be more than four times larger than the current facility. The new campus will expand existing services and introduce additional offerings, including a walk-in veterinary clinic. Grabell emphasized the importance of addressing pet welfare at every stage of a pet’s life to reduce the need for surrenders.

Comprehensive Services for Pet Owners

The planned facility will include a non-profit veterinary clinic, expanded animal shelter space, operating rooms, and community spaces. Last week, the HBSPCA hosted an event to announce the project and seek financial support. The initiative has already secured up to $25 million in institutional financing, with further commitments made during the event, according to HBSPCA spokesperson Karissa Kugler.

The need for such a facility has become increasingly urgent, as highlighted by Rosie Henein, founder and director of Hammer City Paws Rescue. She noted a significant rise in the number of dogs requiring assistance, attributing this trend to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Many pet owners are struggling with the expenses associated with pet food, veterinary care, and necessary treatments, leading to a rise in surrenders.

Grabell indicated that the new campus will facilitate access to affordable services, such as spaying and neutering, which are essential for controlling the pet population. The HBSPCA already provides these services but aims to reduce wait times to enhance accessibility.

Focus on Education and Community Engagement

In addition to veterinary services, the HBSPCA’s new campus will prioritize education for both pet owners and aspiring veterinarians. Grabell stated that the facility will operate on a price-geared-to-income model, ensuring affordability for all community members. It will also serve as a learning centre where students can gain practical experience in animal care.

In their initial year, veterinary students will engage with the shelter environment, learning about sanitation and herd health. By their fourth year, they will have the opportunity to assist veterinarians in the operating room. This hands-on experience is crucial, especially given the anticipated 20 percent decrease in access to affordable veterinary care in the coming years.

The HBSPCA plans to open the new animal welfare campus in 2028, with construction expected to commence next year. This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenges faced by pet owners and improving animal welfare in the Hamilton-Burlington area.
