Google Photos Enhances Viewer with Smarter Metadata Features

Google Photos has unveiled a significant redesign of its viewer, enhancing the user experience with smarter metadata presentation and streamlined menus. This update aims to improve accessibility and usability, allowing users to interact with their photos more intuitively.
Key Changes in the New Photo Viewer
According to 9to5Google, the updated “Photo view” now prominently displays metadata, including the date, time, and location, at the top of each image. This modification eliminates the previous need for users to swipe to access this information, making it readily visible without cluttering the interface.
In this redesign, a pill-shaped button has been introduced for playing motion pictures, while the ‘Cast’ icon has been relocated to a new three-dot menu. This menu provides shortcuts to additional features, such as Google Lens and options to create collages or cinematic photos. A star icon is now available for favoriting images, enhancing user engagement.
Additional Menu Features and Layout Adjustments
Along with the notable changes to the photo viewer, the three-dot overflow menu now includes several options previously housed in the info/metadata menu. Users can easily access functions such as ordering photos, sharing, and deleting images directly from this streamlined menu, which now features a lighter background theme.
The bottom menu in the viewer has undergone minor adjustments as well. The Google Lens icon has been replaced with an ‘Add to’ option, enabling users to add images to albums, archives, or locked folders. Notably, the ‘Share’, ‘Edit’, and ‘Trash’ options remain unchanged, though the edit icon has been simplified for ease of use.
The rollout of this redesign is occurring with the release of version 7.42 of the Google Photos app, which is now widely available for Android devices. This update reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience by making photo management more efficient and user-friendly.
As Google continues to evolve its applications, this latest improvement in Google Photos demonstrates a clear focus on integrating user-friendly features that prioritize accessibility and simplicity in digital photo management.
