Galiano Island has taken a significant step towards improving its emergency response capabilities by merging the North and South Galiano volunteer fire departments into the newly established Galiano Island Volunteer Fire Department (GIVFD). This consolidation, announced following a comprehensive governance review by the Capital Regional District (CRD) in 2024, aims to create a more efficient and coordinated approach to emergency services on the island.

Both fire departments have independently served the Galiano community for decades. The decision to unify these services reflects a growing recognition of the advantages of collaboration. According to Paul Brent, electoral area director for the Southern Gulf Islands and chair of the Electoral Areas Committee, “This merger strengthens our fire services by fostering a more coordinated and efficient approach to emergency response. It enhances firefighter safety, ensures better resource allocation, and streamlines operations across the island.”

Benefits of the Merger

The consolidation addresses persistent challenges in managing fire services on Galiano Island. By formalizing the longstanding cooperation between the North and South departments, the GIVFD is set to deliver a more resilient and cohesive emergency response. Karen Harris, fire chief of the North Galiano Volunteer Fire Department, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “This merger represents a significant milestone for our island’s emergency services. By uniting our two departments, we are strengthening our ability to protect and serve the Galiano community more effectively.”

The transition to the unified department is expected to be completed by January 2026. All existing fire stations will continue to operate under the new GIVFD, ensuring that current personnel remain in place, thereby maintaining continuity of service for residents.

Looking Ahead

The formation of the GIVFD marks a pivotal moment for emergency services on Galiano Island. It not only enhances the operational efficiency of fire services but also reassures the community of a more robust emergency response framework. The merger reflects a proactive approach to addressing the evolving needs of the island’s residents and ensuring their safety in times of crisis.

As the GIVFD prepares to officially launch, the community can expect an improved level of service that is better equipped to handle emergencies effectively, reaffirming the commitment to safeguard Galiano Island and its inhabitants.
