From Uncertainty to Triumph: One Man’s Journey to Triathlon Success
Alberto Ortiz Rosillo, a 37-year-old resident of Regina, has transformed his life through swimming and triathlon training. Initially hesitant and filled with self-doubt, his journey began with a swimming class that ultimately led to his qualification for the 2026 Triathlon World Championship in Spain.
Standing at the edge of the pool in pink swim trunks, Rosillo was acutely aware of the sharp smell of chlorine and the confidence exuded by other participants. Despite having visited the pool before, this was his first swimming class aimed at a significant goal. “What’s your goal?” asked the coach, to which he responded, “Completing an Olympic distance triathlon.” Her casual reply, “That’s easy,” only heightened his anxiety.
During the initial class, Rosillo struggled with awkward breathing and a lack of grace in the water. At the end, his instructor remarked, “I think we can work with you,” a statement that provided unexpected encouragement and motivated him to return.
Turning a Joke into a Mission
Rosillo’s path to triathlon training began almost by chance. After moving to Canada from Mexico at 22 to pursue his studies, he had prioritized stability over athleticism. While attending a Christmas gathering in 2023, a cousin joked about signing up for a triathlon. The idea lingered in Rosillo’s mind, leading him to reconsider his relationship with water.
Initially, he viewed water as a place for leisure rather than training. However, after starting lessons in January 2024, his coach encouraged him to sign up for a short race in March. Instead of opting for the suggested 375-metre swim, Rosillo committed to the full distance of 750 metres.
On race day, standing at the pool’s edge, Rosillo experienced a familiar tightness in his chest. When the starting horn sounded, adrenaline propelled him through the water. “Lap after lap, I negotiated with myself,” he recalled. Though he was the last to exit the pool, he soon found himself passing other competitors during the run. Crossing the finish line, he felt both exhausted and proud, realizing he had found his place in the event.
Achieving the Unexpected
Following a summer filled with races, Rosillo received an email from Triathlon Canada that would change his life. Instead of a simple “Thank you for participating,” the message confirmed his qualification to represent Canada at the 2026 Triathlon World Championship in Spain.
Overwhelmed with disbelief, he reflected on his journey from that first swimming class surrounded by experienced athletes to now preparing to wear Canada across his chest. The achievement not only validated his hard work but also transformed his perception of himself—from someone who felt out of place to a proud athlete ready to embrace new challenges.
Rosillo’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for growth and achievement, no matter where one starts. Through determination and resilience, he has not only conquered the waters but also redefined his own limits.
