The upcoming boys cross country season is set to showcase several standout runners from the region. Among those expected to make a significant impact are five athletes who have consistently demonstrated their capabilities on the track.

Joey Gonzalez and Nate Martin Lead the Charge

Joey Gonzalez from Crystal Lake South has been a varsity runner since his freshman year and continues to show improvement each season. As a junior, he achieved notable finishes, placing eighth in the Fox Valley Conference meet, 13th at the Class 2A Kaneland Sectional, and 48th at state. He also competed at state as a sophomore. Starting his senior season strong, Gonzalez secured fifth place in the recent McHenry County meet.

Similarly, Nate Martin of McHenry has seen consistent growth over the past three years. Having earned All-Area second-team honors as a junior, Martin finished fifth in the Fox Valley Conference meet, 22nd in the Class 3A Warren Regional, and earned a berth at sectionals. He kicked off his final varsity season by finishing third in the McHenry County meet.

Ellery Shutt and Grady Smith Stand Out

Ellery Shutt from Woodstock has made a name for himself in the Kishwaukee River Conference. He has won the KRC meet and competed at state in each of his three varsity seasons. Shutt’s performance last year earned him All-Area first-team honors after he claimed first place in the KRC meet, finished second at the Class 2A Kaneland Sectional, and achieved ninth at state.

In his sophomore year, Grady Smith from Johnsburg quickly established himself as one of the area’s top distance runners. Last season, he placed second in both the KRC meet and the Class 1A Lisle Sectional, later finishing ninth at state, earning All-Area second-team recognition. Smith began this season strong, finishing sixth in the McHenry County meet.

Jameson Tenopir’s Consistent Excellence

Rounding out this impressive group is Jameson Tenopir from Cary-Grove. Throughout his varsity career, he has consistently finished in the top five at the Fox Valley Conference meet. Last year, Tenopir was named to the All-Area first team after finishing second in the FVC meet, placing second in the Class 3A Warren Regional, and achieving fourth in the Hoffman Estates Sectional. He also qualified for state three times and won the McHenry County meet this season, further solidifying his status as a top contender.

As the season progresses, these five athletes are poised to make significant contributions to their teams and the sport. Their performances in upcoming meets will be closely watched by fans and coaches alike.
