VANCOUVER — In an impressive return to the ice, Filip Chytil played his first regular-season game in over six months on October 9, 2025, helping the Vancouver Canucks secure a decisive 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. The 26-year-old Czech centre made an immediate impact, scoring two goals and demonstrating his value to the team.

Chytil’s first goal came just 2:54 into the third period when he capitalized on a deflected puck that bounced off Flames defenceman Kevin Bahl. Chytil quickly reacted, batting the puck into the net, extending the Canucks’ lead to 2-0. Less than six minutes later, he showcased his speed and skill, receiving a breakout pass from winger Arshdeep Bains before firing the puck over Calgary goalie Dustin Wolf.

After the game, Chytil expressed his commitment to self-improvement. “I just want to be the best version of myself,” he stated. “There is still room to work on so many things… I can be happy until midnight that we won, and tomorrow is another day where we have to work hard.” This performance marked Chytil’s first two-goal game with the Canucks since being traded from the New York Rangers in exchange for centre J.T. Miller.

Chytil’s return comes after a challenging period where he suffered a concussion from a hit by Jason Dickinson of the Chicago Blackhawks on March 15, 2025, sidelining him for the remainder of that season. His teammate, Keifer Sherwood, acknowledged Chytil’s contributions, saying, “He’s a big piece for us. And he’s got some offensive spark.”

Coaching Strategies and Milestones

Canucks head coach Adam Foote noted the importance of managing Chytil’s play style, particularly given his history with concussions. During training camp, the coaching staff focused on strategies to maximize Chytil’s effectiveness while ensuring his safety on the ice. “We were trying to figure out what he did in the past, right? How he played and what we could tweak to try and get him some more space or not put him in dangerous situations,” Foote explained.

Thursday also marked a significant milestone for Foote, as it was his first game as an NHL head coach. He took over the role in May 2025 after the Canucks parted ways with Rick Tocchet. The team celebrated this occasion by presenting Foote with the puck from the victory, which he plans to keep as a memento on his shelf.

Flames’ Goalie Performance

On the other side of the ice, the Flames relied again on goalie Dustin Wolf, who had played the previous night and achieved a shootout win against the Edmonton Oilers. Wolf faced 26 shots in the game against Vancouver, stopping 21. Flames head coach Ryan Huska justified the decision to play Wolf again early in the season, stating, “Early in the year, there should be tons of energy in the tank.”

While Wolf’s performance was not his best, Huska emphasized his consistent ability to give the team a chance to win. As the season unfolds, both teams will look to build on their early performances, with Chytil eager to continue his momentum and the Flames aiming to enhance their defensive strategies.
