The Vancouver Canucks have made significant changes to their forward lines, demoting forward Evander Kane to the fourth line ahead of their match against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This shift comes as the Canucks struggle at the bottom of the NHL standings, currently sitting at 32nd overall.

During the morning skate on March 15, 2024, Canucks head coach Adam Foote unveiled new line combinations. The latest forward lines featured:
– DeBrusk – Pettersson – Karlsson
– Öhgren – Sasson – Boeser
– O’Connor – Kämpf – Sherwood
– Kane – Räty – Högländer

Thatcher Demko was confirmed to start in goal for the Canucks, who have been grappling with consistency in their performance.

Foote has been experimenting with his line configurations, moving away from a successful trio of Jake DeBrusk, Elias Pettersson, and Linus Karlsson, who controlled an impressive 81.3 percent of expected goals during the 38 minutes they played together. That line did not allow a shot attempt against during their last outing against the Boston Bruins, yet Foote opted to break them up after a lackluster performance against the Buffalo Sabres.

Kane, who had been promoted back to the top line alongside Pettersson and Boeser, saw limited success before being shifted to the fourth line with Räty and Högländer. Since December 1, 2023, Kane has recorded only one goal and six points in 16 games, raising questions about his performance and role on the team. Despite this, he still leads all Canucks forwards in five-on-five ice time per 60 minutes this season and has maintained that position over the last ten games.

Kane’s current demotion to the fourth line has sparked discussion among fans and analysts. Some argue that the move is warranted given his recent struggles. Meanwhile, Högländer, who has not recorded a point in ten games since returning from ankle surgery, also finds himself in a difficult position.

As the Canucks prepare to face the Maple Leafs, the pressure is mounting. With the team recently overtaken by the Winnipeg Jets following their latest loss, the Canucks will need to find a way to turn their season around. The upcoming game presents an opportunity for the players, including Kane, to prove their value and contribute to the team’s success.
