Residents in Badger, a town in central Newfoundland, are facing urgent evacuation orders due to the rising waters of the Exploits River. On March 14, 2024, the provincial government expanded the evacuation order to include additional homes as concerns grow over potential flooding.

The evacuation directive now encompasses all civic numbers on several streets, including Beothuk Street, Earle Street, Kinsman Drive, Main Street, Park Street, River Road, Sheppard Street, and even civic numbers on the north side of Badger Drive. Additionally, residents in Maple Street between civic numbers 34-76 and 33-99 are also required to evacuate.

Evacuated residents are advised to register at the Badger Community Centre located at 19 Maple Street. The Department of Justice and Public Safety has confirmed that the province’s emergency operations centre is currently operating at Level 2, indicating that emergency partners are actively engaged in response efforts.

The local community is urged to stay informed as updates are being posted on the Community of Badger’s official Facebook page. The situation remains fluid, and officials are closely monitoring the water levels of the Exploits River. Residents are encouraged to prepare for possible further evacuations as conditions may change.

Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of all residents affected by this emergency. As the river continues to rise, community members are reminded to heed evacuation orders and to follow guidance from local officials.
