EdTech Leader Advocates AI for Neurodiverse Learners’ Success

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has the potential to significantly enhance career support for neurodivergent learners, according to James Tweed, the founder and CEO of the Cambridge-based edtech firm Coracle. During the recent UK National Careers Week, Tweed highlighted the urgent need for the education sector to adopt AI technology to better assist individuals with diverse learning needs in securing employment.

Tweed argues that many young people are being underserved by traditional education systems that fail to accommodate their unique learning styles. His company specializes in providing secure digital education across more than 90% of public prisons in England and Wales. This innovative platform enables learners to engage with courses that range from basic skills to vocational qualifications, utilizing offline devices within their cells.

AI-Powered Learning Assistant in Development

Tweed is now directing his efforts toward creating an AI-powered learning assistant, specifically designed to customize educational content in real time for learners with conditions such as dyslexia and ADHD. This system is being developed in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire and has received backing from Innovate UK. It will adapt learning materials based on individual interactions, pacing, and areas of difficulty, catering to the immediate needs of neurodivergent learners.

“Too many people are held back not by lack of ability, but by education systems that aren’t designed for their specific needs,” Tweed stated. He emphasizes that policymakers and educational leaders should explore how adaptive technology can dismantle barriers and enhance access to opportunities for all learners.

The scope of this initiative is particularly significant, as Tweed notes that many individuals who have faced exclusion from traditional schools often find themselves incarcerated. Research indicates that neurodiversity, including conditions like dyslexia, is disproportionately represented in the prison population. Tweed believes that AI can play a crucial role in bridging the gap between education and meaningful employment.

Transformative Potential of AI in Education

Among the various advantages of integrating AI into educational systems, Tweed highlights its capacity to provide real-time support. “With the help of AI, we can support people in real time—recognising when they struggle, adapting how we support them, and helping them build confidence and skills that can translate directly into career opportunities,” he explained.

Neurodivergent students often face challenges in conventional classroom settings, which can impede their educational and career outcomes. Tweed argues that responsive digital tools represent a practical solution to this issue, as they can adapt to individual learning requirements. The secure AI system he is developing operates without internet connectivity, a vital feature for its intended use in prisons, but Tweed envisions that its benefits could extend to mainstream education and workplace training.
