The DeKalb Public Library will conduct a workshop aimed at empowering community members to transcribe original documents from the National Archives. This initiative is part of the broader America 250 project, which commemorates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. Scheduled for 2 p.m. on January 11, 2024, the workshop will take place in the library’s Zimmerman Meeting Room, located at 309 Oak St.

Participants in the workshop will gain valuable skills in deciphering cursive handwriting and creating keyword tags to enhance document accessibility. The session will also offer hands-on experience with the transcription process, allowing attendees to engage directly with historical texts.

To participate, individuals must establish a login with the National Archives, which requires two-factor authentication for security purposes. The library will provide laptops for use during the workshop. Due to space limitations, attendance will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

For additional information or inquiries, interested individuals can contact Emily K. via email at [email protected] or by phone at 815-756-9568, ext. 6106. This workshop represents a unique opportunity for community members to connect with their history and contribute to preserving important documents for future generations.
