Dalhousie Faculty Association Demands Fair Pay Amid Budget Cuts

The Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) is calling for urgent action as faculty salaries have fallen significantly behind inflation, impacting their ability to maintain their positions. In a statement released on October 30, 2023, DFA president Dave Westwood highlighted the financial struggles facing faculty members, particularly after the university’s recent decision to lock out staff.
According to the university’s 2024-25 financial report, faculty salaries at Dalhousie University have decreased by 9% when adjusted for inflation. This decline places them below the average salaries of the U15 group of Canadian research universities. The DFA reported that assistant professors, in particular, earn approximately $7,000 less than the national median salary for their peers, leading some faculty members to seek additional employment or consider leaving the university.
Westwood emphasized that the situation requires renewed provincial investment in post-secondary education. He noted that the current salary levels are unsustainable for many faculty, who are finding it increasingly difficult to afford living expenses while fulfilling their academic duties.
The DFA’s concerns are echoed by wider issues within the educational sector, as many universities across Canada face budget constraints that affect faculty compensation. The association has urged the provincial government to prioritize funding for higher education to ensure that institutions can attract and retain qualified educators.
In light of these challenges, the DFA is advocating for fair cost-of-living adjustments and essential support for faculty. The association believes that addressing these financial disparities is crucial not only for faculty welfare but also for maintaining the quality of education at Dalhousie University.
As discussions regarding faculty compensation continue, the Dalhousie Faculty Association remains committed to representing the interests of its members and securing a fair resolution to this pressing issue.
