Church Collapse in Ethiopia Claims at Least 25 Lives During Celebration
At least 25 people lost their lives when a church under construction collapsed in Ethiopia’s Amhara region on March 13, 2024. The tragedy struck at the Menjar Shenkora Arerti Mariam Church as worshippers gathered for an annual celebration honoring St. Mary. Local authorities reported that the incident occurred early in the day, leading to a devastating toll.
Seyoum Altaye, a clinician at a nearby hospital, confirmed that among the victims are both children and elderly individuals. “So far we have confirmed 25 dead and over a hundred injured,” he stated. Medical facilities in the area are currently overwhelmed, and the hospital is seeking assistance from the Ethiopian Red Cross to care for the injured.
The local administrator, Teshale Tilahun, expressed grave concern over the situation. He indicated that the death toll could potentially rise as rescue efforts continue. “It is a tragic loss for the community,” he noted, highlighting the deep impact on local residents.
Witnesses reported a scene of chaos as the structure collapsed, with many worshippers trapped beneath the debris. Emergency responders rushed to the site to assist in rescue efforts, but the scale of the disaster has posed significant challenges.
Local officials are currently investigating the cause of the collapse. Preliminary reports suggest that structural issues may have contributed to the disaster, but further analysis will be necessary to determine the exact circumstances.
This incident marks one of the deadliest construction-related disasters in the region in recent years, raising questions about safety regulations in place for such projects. The community, deeply affected by the loss, is now coming to terms with the aftermath of the tragedy as families mourn their loved ones.
As recovery efforts continue, local officials are urging for immediate support to aid those injured and displaced by the incident. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
