Chilliwack has been identified as having the highest crime rate in Canada for 2024, according to data released by Statistics Canada in July 2025. The city’s crime rate ranked prominently among census metropolitan areas, drawing attention to the ongoing issues of public safety within the community.

The overall crime rate for Chilliwack was reported at 11,352 incidents, marking a decrease of four percent from the previous year. In comparison, Kamloops recorded a crime rate of 10,546, which also decreased significantly, down by 19 percent year-on-year. The data highlights the complexity of crime trends, as Chilliwack continues to grapple with safety concerns despite improvements in certain statistics.

Crime Severity Index Shows Alarming Trends

Chilliwack’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) stood at 141.7, placing it at the top of the list for crime severity in Canada. Kamloops followed with a CSI of 129.9, while Winnipeg reported a CSI of 124.4. The Abbotsford-Mission area had a considerably lower CSI of 95. These figures underscore the challenges faced by Chilliwack in addressing crime and safety.

Mayor Ken Popove responded to the report by emphasizing that public safety remains a key priority for the city council. He noted that despite Chilliwack’s high ranking in crime statistics, the overall crime rate has decreased compared to previous years. “Public safety encompasses more than just police enforcement,” Popove stated, highlighting the city’s 2021 Community Safety Plan. This plan advocates for a more holistic approach to public safety, prioritizing prevention and intervention strategies.

Calls for Action from All Levels of Government

Mayor Popove expressed frustration over the lack of meaningful changes in response to ongoing advocacy efforts directed at provincial and federal governments. He pointed out the need for improvements in healthcare and court reform as critical components of a comprehensive strategy to address crime. “Unfortunately, despite our advocacy, we have not seen any meaningful changes,” he remarked, indicating the necessity for a broader response to the issues affecting public safety in Chilliwack.

The findings from Statistics Canada reflect the ongoing complexities of crime in urban environments and the varying effectiveness of local and national policies aimed at improving safety. As Chilliwack continues to navigate these challenges, the community’s leaders remain committed to finding solutions that extend beyond policing, focusing on root causes and prevention strategies to create a safer environment for residents.
