Cedar Hill Middle School Opening Delayed by Two Days
The opening of the new Cedar Hill Middle School in Victoria, British Columbia, has been postponed by at least two days, according to the Greater Victoria School District (SD61). Originally scheduled to welcome students on September 2, 2025, the school will not be ready for classes until Thursday at the earliest. The delay was communicated to families last week.
In a statement, SD61 Superintendent Deb Whitten expressed gratitude for the community’s understanding during this period of transition. “I thank staff and families for their patience and flexibility,” she remarked. Whitten emphasized the excitement surrounding the new facility, which is designed to provide a safer and more modern learning environment for students.
Construction Details and Features
Construction of the new school began in November 2023, adhering to the latest seismic safety codes. The project, which has an estimated cost of $54 million, incorporates advanced features aimed at sustainability and student well-being. The school will house 21 classrooms, a gym, a library, and specialized spaces for art, drama, music, foods, textiles, and technology.
Moreover, the building will feature a geothermal field, solar panels, and heat pumps, contributing to a projected 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to facilities meeting only minimum building code standards. The design also includes breakout learning spaces and an Indigenous Welcome Space, reflecting a commitment to diverse educational needs.
The original Cedar Hill Middle School, built in 1931, was replaced to accommodate modern educational requirements and safety standards. As the community awaits the new school’s opening, anticipation grows for the enhanced educational experiences it promises to deliver.
With the new school’s launch now delayed, families and educators are prepared to adapt, looking forward to the positive impact this state-of-the-art facility will have on the local community.
