Carbon Monoxide Leak at Piikani Nation Rink Leads to Hospitalizations

Officials from the Piikani Nation in southern Alberta are investigating a carbon monoxide leak that resulted in several hospitalizations on August 20, 2023. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at the Piikani Nation Multi-Purpose Centre, where attendees began to report feeling unwell.
Upon further examination, it was determined that a significant buildup of carbon monoxide had occurred within the facility. In response, arena staff quickly evacuated the building, ensuring the safety of those present. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on the scene to assess the situation and provide care to individuals affected by the gas exposure.
In a statement released on the evening of the incident, the Piikani Nation expressed its concern for the well-being of all individuals involved. “First and foremost, Piikani Chief, its Council, and arena staff offer their best wishes for the well-being of all involved,” the statement read. It was confirmed that some individuals required hospitalization following the exposure.
Investigation and Safety Measures Underway
Following the incident, technicians have been deployed to conduct a comprehensive review of the mechanical operations at the arena. Their task will focus on identifying the cause of the carbon monoxide buildup and ensuring that all systems are functioning properly to prevent future occurrences.
The Piikani Nation also announced plans to review existing safety protocols related to carbon monoxide and other potential hazards within the facility. While additional updates were not available as of Thursday morning, the community remains vigilant in addressing the issue and prioritizing the health and safety of its residents.
This incident highlights the importance of maintaining safety measures in public spaces, especially in areas where individuals gather for recreational activities. The Piikani Nation is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all participants and will take necessary steps following the investigation’s findings.
As the community awaits further information, the focus remains on supporting those affected and enhancing safety measures at the Multi-Purpose Centre.
