The Vancouver Canucks secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory against the St. Louis Blues on October 28, 2023, despite facing significant injury challenges. The team, already the most injured in the NHL, suffered another setback early in the game when forward Brock Boeser was struck by a puck during a shot taken by defenceman Elias Pettersson. Boeser remained on the ice for a brief period before being assisted to the dressing room and did not return to the match, marking him as the ninth player sidelined due to injury.

The Canucks now find themselves with exactly half of their roster unavailable, comprising six forwards and three defencemen. Following the game, head coach John Foote expressed both disbelief and hope regarding the team’s injury woes. “We gotta find that person with a voodoo doll, if that’s a thing,” Foote commented. “I mean, I don’t believe in that stuff, but I’m like, what is going on here?”

Despite the injury to Boeser, the Canucks demonstrated remarkable resilience, managing to clinch the win in a shootout. Kiefer Sherwood emerged as the star of the evening, netting all three goals for the Canucks, thereby achieving his second career hat trick. Goaltender Kevin Lankinen played a pivotal role, stopping 36 of 39 shots and successfully defending all three shootout attempts.

Foote praised his team’s determination, stating, “You lose Boes, a good player like that in the first shift, and you’re like, here we go again.” He highlighted the significance of the team’s performance, saying it was “the best team win I’ve seen since I’ve been here, as far as being resilient.”

In a positive turn, Foote also provided an encouraging update on Boeser’s condition, indicating that he could return for the next game. “I can’t even tell you what happened to him, but I think he should be back next game,” he said.

The Canucks’ victory, achieved under pressure and with a depleted roster, reflects both their competitive spirit and the ability to adapt to adversity. As the season progresses, the team and its fans remain hopeful for the swift recovery of their injured players and continued success on the ice.
