Canadian Skier Reece Howden Critiques Poor Conditions at Olympics
Canadian skier Reece Howden faced disappointing circumstances during the men’s ski cross final at the 2022 Olympics, where he ended his competition in fourth place among four skiers in his heat. Despite entering the event with hopes of securing a medal, Howden’s aspirations were dashed, leading him to voice his frustration regarding the challenging conditions on the course.
In a candid assessment of the track, Howden stated, “It is ridiculous. This is a joke.” He noted that the times recorded during the final were significantly slower than expected, estimating they were “10 to 15 seconds slower” than his earlier performance. During the qualification round, when conditions were more favourable, Howden achieved a time of 1:06.13, the fastest of the day. In contrast, Italian skier Simone Deromedis secured the gold medal with a time of approximately 1:18.
Howden elaborated on the drastic changes in the course conditions, saying, “It’s a completely different course.” He expressed his disappointment at the delays to his Olympic journey, remarking, “If I waited four years for this, I’ll wait another four because this is a joke.”
The adverse weather, including heavy snowfall, hampered the competition, leading Howden to describe the track as “dead slow.” He added, “Honestly, at this point, I’m happy I’m not involved in this race because this is ridiculous. Like, this is not ski cross.”
With this being Howden’s second Olympic appearance, he reflected on his previous experience, where he finished ninth in the men’s ski cross event at the 2022 Olympics. This year marked a historical moment, as it was the first time no Canadian athlete secured a medal in ski cross, a sport in which Canada has traditionally excelled.
Howden’s passionate critique underscores the importance of optimal conditions for athletes competing at the highest level. As he looks ahead, he remains hopeful for future competitions, emphasizing that the Olympics should represent the pinnacle of sporting excellence.
