Canadian Food Inspection Agency Recalls Egg Sheets Over Salmonella Risk
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall for Si Ji Mei brand Wuhan egg sheets with glutinous rice due to potential salmonella contamination. The affected product is the Si Ji Mei’s Wuhan Egg Sheets with Glutinous Rice, packaged in 580 g containers, with a UPC code of 6 977013 950971 and a production code of 2025/09/12. This recall affects consumers in both Alberta and British Columbia.
The recall was initiated by the manufacturer following reports of illnesses that may be associated with the consumption of this product. The CFIA has advised consumers to check their homes for the recalled egg sheets and to either dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase.
Salmonella infections can lead to a range of symptoms including fever, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. In severe cases, complications can arise, particularly among vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While contaminated food may not present any visible signs of spoilage, it poses a significant health risk.
Public Health Advisory and Ongoing Investigations
The CFIA strongly recommends that consumers refrain from consuming, serving, or distributing the recalled egg sheets. If individuals believe they have fallen ill due to consuming this product, they are encouraged to seek medical attention.
In addition to this recall, the CFIA is actively conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of additional products. The agency is also working to ensure that affected items are removed from the marketplace.
This recall follows a larger salmonella outbreak connected to pistachio and pistachio-containing products across Canada. So far, there have been a total of 24 reported hospitalizations due to salmonella, with 155 confirmed cases across several provinces including Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick.
As a precautionary measure, the CFIA has enacted a temporary ban and revised licensing conditions for businesses involved in importing Iranian pistachio products and those preparing products in Canada using these pistachios. These steps aim to mitigate the risk of further salmonella contamination.
Consumers are urged to stay informed about food safety developments and to exercise caution when purchasing products that have been involved in recalls.
