Canada Triumphs Over Denmark in Billie Jean Cup Playoffs

Canada’s tennis team secured a crucial victory over Denmark in the Group A playoffs of the Billie Jean Cup, held in Monterrey, Mexico, on November 15, 2025. The pairing of Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and Victoria Mboko from Toronto clinched the win in the doubles match, defeating the Danish duo of Emma Kamper and Johanne Christine Svendsen with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

The doubles match lasted just 59 minutes, during which the Canadians demonstrated impressive performance with four aces and only one double fault. They won 62 out of the 100 points contested and successfully converted three break points. This victory allowed Canada to secure a 2-1 win in the best-of-three contest.

Mboko’s Key Singles Match

Prior to the doubles showdown, Victoria Mboko played a pivotal singles match against Johanne Christine Svendsen. After an hour and 24 minutes of intense play, Mboko emerged victorious with a 7-5, 6-3 win, equalizing the playoff match at 1-1. Mboko showcased her strong serve with a total of 11 aces and converted an impressive 86 percent of her points on first serve. In contrast, her opponent struggled, recording no aces and four double faults.

The statistics highlighted Mboko’s dominance, as she won five out of twelve break points, while Svendsen managed to win only two out of five. Svendsen did save seven of the twelve break points she faced, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

Brace’s Tough Opening Match

In the opening match, Cadence Brace faced a challenging contest against Rebecca Munk Mortensen. Brace initially took the lead by winning the first set 6-3. However, she ultimately fell short, losing the next two sets 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in a match that extended over an exhausting three hours and 41 minutes.

Both players had similar statistics, with Brace recording two aces and six double faults, while Munk Mortensen achieved four aces but also committed eight double faults. The Danish player edged ahead in key areas, winning seven out of fourteen break points and saving fifteen out of twenty-three break points against her.

Looking ahead, Canada is set to face Mexico in their next match. Mexico previously defeated Denmark 2-1 in their Group A playoff on November 14. As the competition intensifies, the focus will be on how the Canadian team can leverage their recent successes in the upcoming challenges.
