Canada Issues Travel Advisory for India Following Security Threats
The Canadian government has updated its travel advisory for India, urging citizens to exercise a high degree of caution due to escalating security risks. The advisory was issued on November 11, 2023, following a deadly incident in New Delhi that left at least 13 people dead and 20 injured.
On November 10, a car explosion occurred near a metro station and the historic Red Fort, a popular tourist destination. The blast, which took place shortly before 19:00 local time, is believed to have originated from a vehicle that stopped at a traffic signal. In response to this incident, the Government of India has heightened security measures across several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Travelers to India are advised to avoid popular tourist areas and remain vigilant. The updated advisory specifically highlights the need for caution in and around major cities such as Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai. Citizens are also encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local media and following guidance from local authorities.
In light of the current situation, the Consulates General of Canada in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai will be temporarily suspending in-person operations. Canadians seeking consular assistance can contact the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi for support and information.
Travel advisories are an essential resource for Canadians, enabling them to make informed decisions while abroad. The Canadian government routinely reviews these advisories, which can be influenced by factors ranging from political unrest to safety concerns such as petty crime.
For those traveling internationally, the Government of Canada offers the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) service. This free and confidential service alerts citizens of emergencies while they are outside the country or informs them of personal emergencies at home.
As the situation continues to evolve, Canadian travelers are urged to prioritize their safety and remain aware of their surroundings.
