Calgary Motorcyclist Fleeing Police Charged After Wild Chase
Calgary police have laid charges against a motorcyclist who allegedly fled from officers during a high-speed pursuit that traversed several areas of the city, including a park. The incident occurred on the morning of August 17, 2023, when officers attempted to pull over a motorcyclist riding without a license plate near the intersection of 17th Avenue and 31st Street S.E.
According to the Calgary Police Service, the motorcyclist, identified as Joshua Daniel Poirier, 33, evaded capture by driving onto a sidewalk and a pedestrian pathway that led into a nearby park. Witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle weave through pedestrians before returning to the road and accelerating northward at high speeds, disregarding multiple traffic signals.
Police made several attempts to stop Poirier, but the pursuit only concluded when he abandoned the motorcycle north of the city on Range Road 23, just north of Highway 772. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) assisted in the arrest, ensuring a swift conclusion to the dangerous situation.
Poirier now faces multiple charges related to the incident and is scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on August 18, 2023. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the specific charges he faces, but they emphasize the dangers posed by such reckless behavior on public roads.
The Calgary Police Service continues to investigate the incident, urging anyone who may have witnessed the event or possesses additional information to come forward. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in managing high-risk situations involving fleeing suspects.
