Calgary Launches $60 Million Library Square Development in East Village
A new residential rental development is set to commence in Calgary’s East Village, adjacent to the Central Library. The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) held a ceremonial sod-turning on Monday for the future project, marking the start of a significant phase in the area’s development. This initiative is part of CMLC’s broader business plan for 2026, which highlights five new developments aimed at addressing the city’s rising demand for housing and hotel accommodations.
CMLC President and CEO Kate Thompson expressed confidence in the East Village’s potential, stating that the ongoing demand is driving development confidence in the area. The corporation plans to invest over $700 million in various capital projects throughout 2026, with this year expected to see the highest level of investment in East Village development since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New Developments in Focus
The first construction project set to begin this year is Bankside Properties’ Library Square. This six-storey development will provide 162 purpose-built rental units and is budgeted at $60 million. Located directly east of the central library, the project will replace two surface parking lots and is scheduled to begin construction in February 2026. Cole Richardson, managing principal for Bankside Properties, indicated that the goal is to offer “mid-market” rental rates, with most units priced under $2,000 per month.
Richardson noted that the location’s proximity to downtown and the amenities available in the East Village were significant factors in selecting the site. “The shops, restaurants, and natural amenities like parks and the river walk were a big part of it,” he added.
Alongside Library Square, four additional developments are slated for launch in the East Village this year. Collectively, these projects are expected to create approximately 600 housing units and 132 hotel rooms. The residential projects include:
– Ayrshire Group’s Lyric: A six-storey building providing 208 units.
– Slokker Homes’ Vibe: Delivering 218 units and 1,100 square meters of commercial space.
– The Edgewater: A nine-storey development by Trico Communities, featuring 170 units.
– A new hotel project led by Truman, which will consist of 132 rooms across a five-storey property.
Commitment to Development
CMLC’s strategic focus on the East Village is part of a long-term vision to enhance the area as a vibrant urban community. The ambitious plans laid out for 2026 aim to not only meet housing demands but also to stimulate economic growth and revitalization of the region. As Calgary continues to evolve, the commitment from organizations like CMLC and Bankside Properties reflects an optimistic outlook for the city’s future development landscape.
